New Senior Advisory Councils Take Flight Across San Francisco

San Francisco Neighborhood Centers Together is pleased to announce the grant recipients of our new Senior Advisory Council program.

This new initiative supports our centers to establish or expand senior advisory councils, groups of older adult clients who take an active role in shaping the programs and services our centers offer. This ensures that our centers are always offering programs that reflect the needs of the communities we serve.

Thank You to Our Funding Partners

We are grateful to our primary funding partner of this program, The Joseph & Vera Long Foundation. We were grateful to be awarded their Healthy Aging grant to pursue their goal of supporting low-income seniors to become more socially connected, supported, and engaged in their communities, leading to improved health and well-being. We also appreciate Metta Fund for their continued support to round out funding for this program.

Awards

Awards were given to five centers: I.T. Bookman, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, TEL HI Neighborhood Center, Good Samaritan Family Resource Center, and Richmond Neighborhood Center. Read on to see highlights from a few of the programs that have been made possible thanks to this new program.

Featured Awards & Programs:

Good Samaritan Family Resource Center

Good Samaritan’s resident council at Bernal Homes organized a special Black History & Chinese Lunar New Year celebration event to bring residents together. The Resident council meet beforehand with staff and Property management to plan and organize the event for the entire resident community at Bernal Homes. They were involved in every aspect from planning, outreach and promotion, facilitation and set up and clean up.

TEL HI Neighborhood Center

TEL HI used this grant award to support their “Seniors with a Purpose” program that empowers older adults to take an active role at the center.

“The Senior Program tends to get overlooked, with more emphasis placed on the programs for kids and teens. Likewise, seniors tend to get overlooked in our society. The Advisory Council focuses on providing programs and funding that help Tel Hi's seniors live active and meaningful lives."

- Dale Fehringer, Member of Seniors with a Purpose

Richmond Neighborhood Center

The Senior Advisory Council used their popular Lunar New Year event as a way to kick-off recruitment and feedback for a new Senior Advisory Council. They will use funds for a tai chi instructor, transportation fees for a park or museum visit, workshops on priority community topics, and skill-based classes such as computer training, sewing, and gardening.
